Breaking News at The Wireless Zone

Tenant of the Month

Wireless Zone located at 975 Merriam Avenue, within the Twin City Shopping Center is owned and operated by Doug Lyon. The business will celebrate their 13th year of business in May 2011.

Wireless Zone has 400 stores nationally and opened the Twin City Shopping Center store in May of 1998.

Wireless Zone is the largest private premium retailer for Verizon Wireless products and services.  The store sells the Apple iPad which just recently became available through many Verizon Wireless channels.  They also sell Verizon Wireless phones and devices, Verizon Wireless broadband hardware, the service and all the accessories that go with these products.

Doug first started in the Wireless industry in 1988.  He worked primarily with the carriers and service provider segment of the business.  The indirect or retail distribution arm of the industry was less significant in the very early years of wireless.  In 1998, a friend of Doug’s made him aware of a unique retail opportunity with Wireless Zone.  At first, Doug was reluctant but eventually decided to join him in partnership.  The chance to own and operate a business was attractive.  Doug was up for the challenge.

Without hesitation, Doug states, “Customer Services is what he credits most for his success.  It’s just the way we do business.”  Doug has always tried to go above and beyond any standard retail experience regarding customer service.  Doug believes that customers have many choices of where to shop, but nowhere will they receive the personal level of service his store provides.

If there was one thing that Doug would want consumers to know about him and his business, is that the Twin City Wireless Zone is knowledgeable, friendly and has a lot of experience in the business.  If Doug’s store doesn’t carry the product or information you are looking for, they will find it for you.  Doug firmly believes that this is their practice. Doug has a clock in his office that reads, “Customer Service Is Not a Department, it’s an Attitude.”  Doug likes to add, “the best part is, it’s free!”

Future plans for the Wireless Zone include being part of the iPhone excitement.  Doug says, “If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me when Verizon Wireless would get the iPhone, I would have retired by now! It is the single most anticipated product that I can ever remember.”  Wireless Zone can now officially say that they will be a part of the iPhone excitement.  Although, Verizon currently offers some very worthy and competitive devices, many wireless users are infatuated with the iPhone.  This is just one of many changes in the store for the industry this year and Doug is looking forward to it.

A few words of advice from Doug, for anyone starting out,”There are many opportunities for starting a business now, in fact, this may be a great time to do it. Regardless of your product, your experience or your financial strength, be prepared to hire and build the business based on treating your customers the way you expect to be treated.  It will become your single, most valuable asset. If you are not prepared to take care of your customers, someone else will.”

Doug is confident that once you have visited his store, most would agree, the level of service is unmatched.

Warmer Winters is a grassroots organization of volunteers who knit in their homes and at various events organized by the group.  A variety of winter garments including hats, scarves, mittens, sweaters and afghans and knitted.  The organization was started and is led by Executive Director, Judy Gentry of Leominster.

On a brutally cold day in the Winter of 2006, as Judy waited at a bus stop, she saw a young mother holding the raw, mitten-less hands of two little girls. The children were crying, their ears as red as their hands. None of them had hats, scarves or mittens. Judy knew she had to do something. She went home, knitted 10 scarves, and donated them to a shelter. It was a drop in the ocean. Judy then realized that other people might like to do the same thing. She took matters into her own hands and placed a small ad in the paper for volunteers. This ad resulted in seven women joining the group. That Winter Warmer Winters distributed 200 items.

A Fellowship from Community Builders made it possible for Warmer Winters to grow from a small knitting group into a thriving organization. Without the assistance the group received both in funds and technical assistance, there would be no Warmer Winters today.

Warmer Winters knits and gives the items to local shelters and agencies who work with people in need. Warmer Winters currently has over 100 volunteers.  The volunteers of Warmer Winters range in age from 8 to 93 years and consist of men, woman, boys and girls.

The third Friday of each month is Knit Knite.  It is a chance to share tips, patterns and conversation with other volunteers.   If you would like to be a volunteer but don’t know how to knit, they will teach you. Warmer Winters provides all the yarn needed for knitting. If you are on a fixed income, you can still contribute to the community. The organization has many volunteers that are homebound and enjoy giving back.

Warmer Winters also sponsors other events such as their Speed Knitting Contest and their Walk for Warmth, which started in 2010 and will take place annually at the Twin City Shopping Center.

Last year Warmer Winters “gifted” nearly 3,000 items. They are hoping to “gift” 3,500 to 4,000 items this year.

Will your scarves, hats or mittens be part of that number?

Twin City Shopping Center has selected Warmer Winters as the recipient of their Giving Back to the Community Donation for first quarter of 2011.

The Management Team at Geronimo Properties is pleased to be part of such a charitable group.

Not Your Average Sushi

Not Your Average Sushi

Not only is the sushi at Yamato Japan fresh, tasty and voted #1 in North Central Massachusetts, but the Hibachi Grill and Steak is out of this world – far beyond North Central Massachusetts.

This restaurant as well as the Tikki Tikki Chinese restaurant on Main Street in Fitchburg is owned and operated by Jackie Lin of Fitchburg.

For many years Jackie had a dream of opening his own Japanese Sushi Kitchen.  Combining the Japanese culture with cooking was very important to him. One year ago, this past November, that dream came true.
Jackie learned his culinary skill from books and by being an apprentice to a Japanese Chef for over five years in Midtown, NY. After realizing how much he enjoyed what he was doing, he decided to take the leap and open his own place.   After brainstorming with his family, Jackie settled on the name Yamato, meaning Japanese.

Jackie says his customers enjoy the variety that he offers in his restaurant.  They offer a wide array of fine Japanese fusion cuisine, ranging from traditional Sashimi Lunch, Rainbow Roll to new style entrees such as Dinosaur Roll, Twin City Roll and Salmon Avocado.

Unlimited fresh Sushi, Sashimi and delectable innovative Siqnature Roll, Salmon Skin and Shrimp tempura. Various Japanese Appetizer and Salad, Sushi Entrees, Hibachi Lunch, Yaki Soba, Desserts and much more. Everything Served in Your Desired Portion and Made Fresh As you Order.
He believes that coming to his restaurant should not only be about the food, but the experience and the ambiance.  Yamato also offers take out and party platters.

Within the next three years, Jackie hopes to open two more Japanese Grill & Sushi Restaurants.

When asked what advice he can give to someone starting out in business he said, “take the opportunity if it is given to you!”

Please take a moment to congratulate Jackie at Yamato Japan for being our tenant of the month.  Geronimo Properties is pleased to have him as part of our team.

Linkedin for the Business Professional

LinkedIn for the Business Professional

With Over 70 million members currently on Linkedin.com, it’s clearly a good social media tool. But don’t mistake this tool as being similar to Facebook, it’s not, in fact it is quite the opposite. These 70 Million members are not using LinkedIn to communicate updates like they would on Facebook, instead they are using it as a business tool to grow their network of business relationships, including but not limited to former and current coworkers.

Did you know that 66% of users are decision makers? In addition, there are Executives from all Fortune 500 companies. With such a makeup of members, getting introduced to new connections and/or recommended by someone is rather easy.

Here are a couple tips to ensure that you get the most out of LinkedIn as a business professional:

1. Complete your profile
*If your profile is not complete, then you haven’t finished the job. To prospective connections and business partners this can mean that you may not finish the job that they give you or refer you for.

2. Edit your profile URL
*Editing your profile URL makes it easier to remember and to share

3. Build network connections

*Spending the time to grow your connections ultimately means that you will have many more connections than others. Don’t forget to add people that you meet at local networking events as well.

4. Create a company profile
*Doing this will ensure that you are properly connected, and will help others find you when they are searching for you

5. Post status updates
*Don’t over use this feature, but if you post once or twice a week, that is ideal.

6. Comment on other’s status updates
*Having a dialog with someone means that you are establishing a connection and are discussing a relevant topic. To create and participate in discussions means that you are interested in the overall connection and not just a business deal

7. Join groups
*If you spend time to join groups that you are already an expert in (for example a vertical market that you already work within) then you can contribute to these groups and discussions on a regular basis.

8. Make/seek recommendations
*Getting recommended in the business world is the ultimate goal. Everyone says that word of mouth is how they get most of their business. So make this feature work for you on LinkedIn by getting recommendations from others that know you well.

9. Link people together
*If you help connect people, they won’t forget that and your turn will come when the time is right. This is a great feature of the site and you should be sure to use it.

10. Use the search feature
*A great tool to find that person that you just met at a local networking event or chamber. I have also found this to be valuable for connecting with previous coworkers.
